Much of old Hunstanton is built from the distinctive red-and-white carrstone and chalk found nowhere else on the Norfolk coast. Those period properties — particularly the bay-fronted terraces near the green and the older streets off Northgate — tend to have large chimney stacks with wide step flashings that crack and lift as the mortar joint rakes out over the decades. Mastic bodge repairs are common here and rarely last more than a couple of winters facing the North Sea.
